61 people have been arrested by the Russian police for speaking out against the Olympics so far.
The New York Times reports that of the 61 arrests, 23 of them were gay rights protestors.
The first of these arrests came yesterday (7 February) when four protesters, one of whom was a pregnant woman, gathered in St. Petersburg to protest the anti-gay laws currently in place in Russia.
They held a flag quoting Principle 6 of the Olympic Charter, which says any form of discrimination is contrary to the ideals of the Olympics.
‘Discrimination is incompatible with the Olympic Movement. Principle 6. Olympic Charter’ read the flag.
Principle 6 has been adopted by campaigners and Sochi athletes alike to protest the Games being held in a country where homophobia is rife.
On that same day up to 19 arrests were made in Moscow, near the Red Square.
A group of Russian and international gay rights activists sang and unfurled a rainbow flag before the police arrived and put an immediate stop to their protest.
Polina Andrianova, who was arrested in St. Petersburg, said ‘People should be able to protest anywhere, anytime. It’s a human right.’
Furthermore, 37 people were arrested in Nalchik for protesting against the plight of the Circassians’ whose homeland surrounds Sochi and was occupied by Russian forces 150 years ago.
One man was reportedly arrested near a subway station for holding a banner which read: ‘No Thieving Olympics.’
The scale of the arrests which have been made so early on in the Olympics, show the determination of the Russian police to stomp out any form of protest during the Winter Games.
